Customer Profile
Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods Market started in 1980 with one small store in Austin, TX. Today they are the world's leading retailer of natural and organic foods, with more than 270 stores in North America and the United Kingdom. From the beginning, Whole Foods has been a mission-driven company with a deep commitment to sustainability. The company motto "Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet", captures their commitment to sustainability initiatives like recycling. "Whole Foods employees understand that recycling is just as important as any other task they are asked to fulfill," says Kip Lente, Green Mission Representative of Whole Foods’ Highland Drive location in Cottonwood Heights. "The Green Mission objectives are so integrated into our operating environment that staff members do not perceive them as different from the other, more traditional tasks they complete."

It was this deep commitment that led Whole Foods’ Salt Lake City operations to Momentum Recycling. In their constant efforts to minimize their environmental impact, Whole Foods was looking for a recycling partner that shared this deep commitment; a partner that would help them divert as much waste as possible away from landfills, instead directing it to destinations where the materials could be reused.

Momentum Recycling serves Whole Foods by collecting mixed recyclables, glass, and compostable materials (or "green waste"). Since beginning collections, all of these areas have seen increased diversion rates, but it is the volume of green waste collections that really stands out. When Momentum began services for Whole Foods in June of this year, all of the green waste (expired produce, fruit and vegetable scraps, etc.) was going to the landfill. Six months later, Momentum Recycling has helped Whole Foods' three Salt Lake City stores divert over 21 tons of green waste away from the landfill. All of this waste is now being converted into garden compost by two end-users: Wasatch Community Gardens, and the Composting Facility run jointly by Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County.

"Staff members are involved in audits which empower and motivate them to get actively involved in promoting Whole Foods’ values," says Lente. "With over 21 tons of green waste recycled in 6 months, this motivation is paying off." Those are the kind of results that make us proud of what we do every day at Momentum Recycling.

End-User Profile
Wasatch Community Gardens

Wasatch Community Garden's mission is to help people grow and share fresh produce, and to be an active resource for sustainable organic gardening. They also strive to teach urban youth responsibility, cooperation, and ecological awareness.

Wasatch Community Gardens operates 4 community gardens in the Salt Lake Valley, where over 65 community gardeners grow fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs to feed over 200 people.

A portion of all the green waste collected by Momentum Recycling goes to stocking the compost piles at these gardens. By committing to sustainable business practices, our customers play an important role in helping Wasatch Community Gardens improve our community. Community Service
Momentum's Recent Outreach Work
As a mission-driven company, one of our founding principles has been to build awareness of, and commitment to, recycling and other sustainability measures among clients and the greater community. Below you’ll find some recent examples of our work in this area:

  • Utah Food Bank: In November, Momentum Recycling donated glass and mixed recyclable collection services for Rico’s annual Day of the Dead Celebration. The purpose of the event was to raise funds and collect non-perishable food items to benefit the Utah Food Bank.
  • Composting Advocacy Efforts: Momentum is constantly looking for new ways to divert more of our customers' waste away from landfills. In support of this mission, Momentum has been working with other local businesses and organizations to encourage the expansion of the composting capabilities of the Compost Facility run jointly by Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. Currently, the facility only accepts green waste, and we'd like to see its capabilities grow to include all food waste, as well as compostable food service items. This advocacy group has met several times over the past few months, and aims to be a catalyst for positive change in composting options in our city.
  • Recycling Market Development Zone: Momentum has been a vocal advocate for the creation of a Recycling Market Development Zone in Salt Lake City, and we're please to report that the Salt Lake City Council voted on Tuesday, December 9th to create such a zone! The establishment of such zones will stimulate the recycling industry in our city, by providing economic incentives to recycling-oriented businesses located in the Zones. Speaking at the City Council meeting, Momentum co-founder Kate Whitbeck said, "It is gratifying to see that the city is recognizing the value of businesses which enhance the economic and environmental health of the city."
  • Educational Programs for Clients: As part of our basic customer service, Momentum conducts free "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Educational Seminars" for all new clients. In the past quarter, we've conducted over a dozen of these seminars, helping businesses and their employees understand more clearly how to maximize their diversion rates.
  • Cross Fertilization between Clients and End-Users: Momentum has also been facilitating opportunities for our clients and the end users of recyclable materials to meet. In these events, the two groups learn about each other and exchange ideas on recycling and other sustainability measures.

On October 6th, Wasatch Community Gardens (WCG) invited Momentum clients to participate in a tour of their gardens to learn about one of our destinations for green waste. Representatives from Whole Foods, Harmons Grocery, and 3form learned how WCG uses the compost generated from the clients’ green waste to help sustain their operations. The compost is used in both the youth gardens and the community gardens. The support from our clients is critical to ensuring the health of their gardens. For more on Wasatch Community Gardens, check out their website at: www.wasatchgardens.org.

During the tour, Momentum clients also had the opportunity to learn about what other organizations are doing to decrease the size of their ecological footprint. In response to the positive feedback from the tour participants, Momentum Recycling will be offering more tours of other end users’ facilities, as well as tours of client facilities. Stay tuned for information on places & dates!
