Mixed Recyclables.
Materials that can be placed together in the mixed recyclables bin include:
- Plastics (numbered 1-7; including beverage bottles, grocery bags, shrink wrap, etc.)
- White and colored paper (office paper, magazines, phone books, paperbacks)
- Newspapers (including all inserts)
- Cardboard
- Tin (steel) and aluminum cans
- Plastic coated beverage cartons (soda cups, coffee cups)
Mixed recyclables are taken to local Material Recovery Facilities where the materials are sorted and shipped to a variety of different re-processors and end users.
Cardboard & White Office Paper.
Customers have the option of using a separate container for cardboard and office paper if they produce a large volume of these materials. Alternatively, these materials can be mixed in with the mixed recyclables for the sake of ease.
Cardboard and white paper is taken to local Material Recovery Facilities where the materials are sorted and shipped to a variety of different re-processors and end users.
Glass.
Glass must be separated into two containers:
- Clear and green glass. Green and clear glass is taken to a facility where it is crushed and then sold to a company for the production of fiber glass.
- Amber (brown) glass. Amber glass is crushed and reshaped to form terrazzo flooring ingredients or used for landscaping.
Organic Waste.
Momentum partners with the Salt Lake Valley landfill to compost organic waste collected from our customers. Currently, we can collect the following organic waste items for composting:
- Food processing residuals (material remains from fruit and vegetables)
- Coffee grounds
- Sawdust
- Yard waste (leaves, brush, grass clippings, plant trimmings, and plant remains)
The composting section of the Salt Lake Valley Landfill is currently not able to accept the following materials: coffee filters, eggshells, manure, meat, oil, grease, bones, dairy products or materials contaminated by the aforementioned products.
Furthermore, they are unable to accept compostable food service products (“to go” boxes, flatware, cups, plates, bags, paper towels, napkins, etc.). Those products are channeled through the traditional waste stream. Because of this Momentum recommends using recyclable materials for these items until the Salt Lake Valley Landfill updates its capability.
Electronic Waste.
Concerned about what happens to your discarded electronics? Worried about what to do with older televisions? Momentum partners with several electronics recyclers. We have carefully vetted these recyclers to ensure that their processes for disassembly are environmentally responsible, and that the end destinations for the disassembled components are both socially and environmentally responsible.
